The Science of CBD: How it Works, and Why

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is an interesting supplement, which has such a wide range of benefits. Many people ask, since it is strange how a supplement can help such very different, unrelated conditions, how that can be so, and how exactly does CBD work in the body- so that’s the subject of this article.

CBD is a compound known as a cannabinoid that is present in both medical marijuana and the hemp plant. Medical marijuana contains two main compounds or cannabinoids- THC, the part of the marijuana plant that has a psychoactive or “mind-altering” response, responsible for the “high” felt from marijuana; and CBD, the part of the plant that confers the majority of the researched benefits of medical marijuana for pain relief, anxiety, and more.

Interestingly, it’s actually the THC that is generally thought to be the cause of the negative effects associated with marijuana use- impaired memory, paranoia, and possible addictive qualities, whereas CBD is the part of the plant most associated with the benefits of pain relief and soothing anxiety, among others.

Medical marijuana currently requires a prescription in Illinois, but CBD sourced from hemp plants are now legal in all 50 states. Research comparing CBD sourced from both hemp and marijuana have found similar effectiveness regardless of the source of the CBD, which is good news for the majority of us who do not have a prescription for medical marijuana, but still want to experience the many benefits that come with CBD.

The reason CBD is helpful for so many separate and unassociated conditions is actually because it has been discovered that our body has an entire system of receptors called the endocannabinoid system. This system in the body was discovered only recently, in 1992, when researchers were trying to determine how and why marijuana, or cannabis, was able to affect the body so much.

The scientists found that our body has receptors for these compounds known as cannabinoids throughout our body but particularly concentrated in the brain and nervous system, and that our body actually produces its own versions of these compounds very similar to those found in both marijuana and hemp. The researches named this body system the endocannabinoid system- “endo” meaning inside the body, and “cannabinoid” named after cannabis (the scientific name for the plant family that encompasses both marijuana and hemp).

It’s extremely interesting to study, since we have a whole system in our bodies that many people have never heard of, which is active in every human (and actually all mammals) on the planet from before birth until the end of our lives.

Our body naturally products these compounds in response to stress and inflammation, but just like many other substances that the body produces, Vitamin D for example, can have great benefit when used as a supplement.

So to summarize, the reason that CBD works so well in the body and for so many different conditions or reasons, is that our bodies naturally have receptors throughout the body that CBD can bind to, like a key  to a lock, that are able to confer benefits to many different parts of the body. This is the reason that people feel benefits for pain and inflammation reduction after using CBD, as well as reduction in stress and anxiety is because that is what those receptors were made to do. The main purpose of the endocannabinoid system is to bring the body back into balance, reducing those overactive responses (to pain, or anxiety, or what have you) and bringing the back (or at least closer) to how it is meant to be running.
