Time Change Blues

This year the clocks are turning back a bit earlier than usual since the 1st is a Sunday. It's also been such a warm fall, that I feel like the switch to the sun going down an hour earlier is going to be really jarring.

For some people, that increase in darkness can come with a bit of depression (Seasonal Affective Disorder). November and December can also bring stress, anxiety, and just a lower mood.

There are natural supplements that can help. Two we would especially recommend for Seasonal Affective Disorder or mild depression are SAMe (pronounced "Sammy") and the herb saffron.

SAMe occurs naturally in the body and has been studied for depression, as well as pain relief, especially in reducing joint pain. A standard dose is 400mg per day, though some people find benefit in taking a higher dose (800mg) for a week to get it in their system faster. SAMe is also beneficial for liver health. The benefits can sometimes be seen quickly for boosting mood, often in as little as one to two weeks.

Small clinical trials suggest saffron may improve mild depressive symptoms. Studies commonly use standardized extracts around 30 mg a day. Some studies also have linked saffron with reduced snacking (especially stress eating) and have found that it may help with weight loss. Saffron is also good for eye health.

Both supplements should not be mixed with prescription antidepressants and SAMe should not be taken by people affected by Bipolar Disorder.

We also have a number of great supplements that work well for reducing stress and anxiety, like the amino acid Theanine or Life Extension's Anxie-T.
