The People's Choice Award for our Gluten Free Baking Contest was voted by everyone who came in to try the entries. The winner was a Gluten Free Dutch Apple Pie by Steve Qualizza!
Ingredients
Apple Pie Filling:
Prepared gluten free pie crust
6 cups peeled & sliced Granny Smith apples
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
⅓ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup gluten free all purpose flour
1 tablespoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
⅛ teaspoon salt
Crumb Topping:
1 cup gluten free all purpose flour
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup unsalted butter
Directions
Prepare the apples:
Peel, core, and slice your apples (about 6 cups). Place in a bowl and coat with lemon juice to preserve freshness. Cover the bowl and set aside to rest.Make the apple mixture:
In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, gluten-free flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt.
Pour this mixture over the apples and gently combine until the apples are evenly coated.Prepare the crumb topping:
In another bowl, combine the flour and brown sugar. Cut the butter into small pieces and, using a fork, incorporate the butter into the flour-sugar mix until it reaches a sandy consistency.Assemble the pie:
Fill the prepared pie crust with the apple mixture.
Spread the flour and brown sugar topping evenly over the top of the apples.Bake:
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Place the pie in the center of the oven uncovered and bake for 30 minutes.
Then place a tinfoil cover loosely over the pie and bake for an additional 15 minutes.Cool:
Remove from the oven and let rest for approximately 2 hours.
